If a Windows-based program crashes, it is possible that you may need to access your “hidden” folders or documents. A common “hidden” folder is the messages file for Outlook email.
Here is a way to display your hidden files.
Step One – Open “My Computer”
If the “My Computer” icon is not on your desktop, open it by:
- Clicking Start
- Selecting My Computer
Step Two – Change Your Viewing Preferences
The first thing you will do from the “My Computer” screen is select TOOLS. Select “Folder Options” from the drop down menu.

A pop-up will appear. Click the VIEW tab, and then select “Folder Options” and tick the selection that reads “Show Hidden Files and Folders.”

Click the APPLY button on the lower right of the pop-up. You’re now done. Close the pop-up windows.
It’s rare that you will need to view your hidden files. The exception is when you need to repair a Windows-based program on your PC. A common repair in which you will need access to your hidden folders and files is to repair Microsoft Outlook, which will be discussed in a future post.
A Word of Warning
Don’t mess around with or delete your hidden files if you don’t know what you’re doing. This could mess up your operating system.
