Keeping it simple, without the hype. PC tips and Internet advice for mom and pop businesses.
I’ve been thinking about upgrading my laptop, which I consider to be my old war horse that never falters. It’s an old IBM Thinkpad that still has a Windows 2000 operating system. It’s so old that there’s no wireless device in it, although if I plug in a Belkin wireless, it will connect to non-secure wireless servers. I’ll probably keep it for accounting and other things that I use it for, but I’m thinking it’s time to upgrade for business trips.
The thing is, I don’t want to spend a bunch of money on another laptop since I still have one that seems to be working perfectly fine.
If you’re in the same market for a cheap laptop, here are a few of them that I found that are under $600:
HP Compaq – $559.99

This is a brand new HP Compaq 6720 unit that features a variety of multimedia entertainment options such as a a Dual Layer DVD+/-RW LightScribe Drive and 15.4-inch WXGA screen. It has a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5270 processor, 2GB of DDR2 memory, and a 160GB 5400rpm SATA hard drive. It also offers 802.11 a/b/g wireless technology. HP Compaq 6720s Laptop Computer
Refurbished Gateway M-6319 – $509.97

As far as desktop computers are concerned, I really like Gateway. I don’t personally know anyone with a Gateway laptop, but if they are as good as the desktops, this is a good deal. This laptop has Intel Pentium® Dual-Core Mobile T2370 1.73GHz processor, 2GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory, and a 250GB 5400RPM SATA hard drive – operating flawlessly on the Windows Vista Home Premium OS. It has a 15.4-inch Ultrabright™ WXGA display, along with an 8X Multi-format dual layer DVDRW optical drive (with DVD-RAM). With Gateway, you also get the Gateway M-6319’s onboard Intel graphics Media Accelerator X3100 GPU with up to 384MB of shared video memory. The computer comes with high-definition audio, 802.11n wireless LAN, 10/100 Ethernet LAN, integrated 56K modem, 5-in-1 memory card reader, three USB 2.0 ports, and lots more. For just a few cents less than $600 (in other words, $599 and some change), you can get some upgraded versions of Gateway’s “M” series laptops. For example:

Gateway M-6841 Refurbished Laptop Computer
The Gateway M-6841 Refurbished Laptop Computer delivers a “bang for the buck.” Its many features include a Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 1.83GHz processor, 802.11g Wireless, 3GB DDR2, 250GB HDD, DL DVDRW, 15.4 WXGA, Integrated Webcam, and Windows Vista Home Premium.
Netbooks vs. Notebooks and Laptops
The terms “laptops” and “notebooks” are often used interchangeably. The difference is that notebooks are slightly smaller and designed for the mobile user. Laptops are bigger and usually have a bit more power. They can easily replace a desktop computer.
While searching for laptops or notebooks, you may have discovered “netbooks.”
A netbook is a small, light-weight notebook that’s designed for Internet based services such as web browsing and e-mailing. Because it is designed for mobility, the netbook is much smaller than a laptop and smaller than a notebook. Netbooks are not intended to replace desktop computers. For example, and aside from other considerations, the keyboards are small and compact. One of its appeals is that the netbook is reasonably priced. In fact, as you’ll see below, the price range is between $200 and $400.
Generally, the operating system in a netbook is configured specifically for Internet use. They have processors with a lower memory (512K – 2MB) and flash memory and/or smaller hard drives. Some applications might not work well on them. If you’re business shopping, remember the adage: “You get what you pay for.” These seem to be worth a look, however, if they are for personal use or strictly mobile Internet computing and/or data storage.
