Keeping it simple, without the hype. PC tips and Internet advice for mom and pop businesses.
Regardless of whether your favorite search engine is MSN, Yahoo or Google, you have probably noticed something new. It looks like a bar in the lower left corner. This represents your Alexa traffic rank. Here’s a look, using the search term, Christmas special:
What in the World is Alexa?
Alexa has been around since 1996, recording Internet usage with its toolbar. The service uses its toolbar users’ browsing activities to estimate a site’s traffic and to estimate the percentage of Internet users who are likely to visit it. You can visit the site at http://www.alexa.com.
Why Is a Traffic Rank with Alexa Important?
Many Internet marketers argue about the relevancy of Alexa as an accurate measure of quality traffic, citing the fact that it relies on the toolbar and makes estimates. (Traffic analysis is discussed in my September article.) Despite these arguments, Alexa is clearly the #1 source that advertisers and ad networks rely on in determining the worth of a link on your website. If you are paid to write content on your blog, the advertisers will always take a look at your Alexa rank.
Coming up: Tomorrow, we’ll take a look at how you can find out what your Alexa traffic rank is for your website.
