Keeping it simple, without the hype. PC tips and Internet advice for mom and pop businesses.
In yesterday’s post, we wrote that Alexa rankings are now shown on the results reported by the major search engines, Yahoo, MSN and Google. If you are a mom and pop business site owner, you’re probably wondering what is reported about your Alexa traffic ranking. Here’s how you can find out.
Method #1 – The Direct Approach.
To discover your site’s particular traffic rank, you can go directly to Alexa and click the Traffic Rankings tab on the top of the page.
Type in your site’s URL in the search box in the upper left column as shown and then click “Go.” In this example, I used this blog, http://www.notguru.com, in the search box. The next screen will show your Alexa traffic rank and other information:
Method #2 – Install the Alexa Toolbar.
You can install the Alexa Toolbar. Once installed, it will reside on the bottom of your screen and display Alexa data on virtually any website that you visit. Your toolbar will look like this:
Alexa explains what this means on its website:
You can easily download and install Alexa’s Toolbar by visiting http://www.alexa.com/site/download – By installing the toolbar, you will enhance the overall results reported by Alexa. Additionally, many Internet marketers believe that by installing the toolbar, the rank of your own sites will improve (methods for improving your Alexa ranking will be discussed the day after tomorrow).
Method #3 – Use an SEO Add-On.
As a Firefox user, I like the different add-ons available for the browser, including SEO Quake. I wrote a detailed review of SEO Quake here. If you are using a service such as SEO Quake, the Alexa Traffic Rank will be reported on every site you visit (so long as the toolbar is “toggled” so that results display on the top of your browser). Here is what you will see:
Method #4 – Click on the “Rank” Directly From the Search Engine Results.
Yesterday, we took a look at how the Alexa Rank is showing in the major search engine results. As a recap, here’s Google’s results for the term, “Christmas special.”
By hovering your curser over the Alexa Rank (which is the bar circled in red in the example above), you should be able to see the numerical rank. Alternatively, click the Alexa Rank bar and you will be directed to the Alexa site’s report on the URL’s traffic.
