Get Noticed in the Blogosphere

Posted on December 7th, 2008 by Urbain

Those who are new to the “blogosphere” might not know about its search engine, Technorati.  Just like you want to get your site indexed with Google, Yahoo and MSN, you will also want to get your blog indexed at Technorati.

According to Wikipedia, “As of June 2008, Technorati indexes 112.8 million blogs and over 250 million pieces of tagged social media.”

To get your blog indexed at Technorati, follow the service’s easy steps from their “Blogger Central” link.  Claim your blog and ping it (simple instructions will show you every step of the way).

If you have a Wordpress blog, add Technorati’s ping address into Wordpress’ automatic ping service.  To do this:

  1. Log into your Wordpress blog’s administrative area.
  2. Click the “settings” link on the top right of your dashboard.
  3. Click the “writing” option.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page where you will see a form called “Update Services.”
  5. Add Technorati’s ping address, which is http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping

You can add many other ping services to your “Update Services.”  For a current list, see my article on a good ping list.

Why Should this Matter to Small Businesses?

To increase your traffic rank and recognition, you will want your blog to have a high Technorati Authority and Ranking.  Generally speaking, a way to do this is to get inbound links from other blogs that are listed wtih Technorati.

Your blog’s “authority” will show all of the inbound links from blogs listed at Technorati.  If a blog posts more than one link to your site, it will only count as one authority link at Technorati.  For instance, let’s say a blog called HappyBlogging. com is listed with Technorati and has your blog listed in its blogroll on the sidebar.  If HappyBlogging has 1200 pages, your link in the blogroll will show up 1200 times.  For purposes of Technorati’s authority rank, only one of those links will count.

When you log into your Technorati account, you can click the “Claimed Blogs” link to see your blogs that are claimed at Technorati and what the authority and traffic ranking is being reported by Technorati.  As of today, December 7, here is what this blog is showing:

The authority is 63, meaning that 63 different blogs that are registered at Technorati have linked to the site.  The ranking is 80,857 out of the approximate 112 million blogs.  I suppose that’s not too bad, but I definitely have a way to go!

Building Your Technorati Authority.

One way to build your authority is to visit the blogs listed at Technorati’s popular blogs, top 100 blogs and directory .  Post intelligible, non-spammy comments in the blogs that interest you.  But don’t waste your time.  Here’s why.

By default, most Wordpress blogs have a “nofollow” tag in their comments, so your link will not show in the search engines and Technorati if the blog you are commenting on has the “nofollow” feature enabled.  You can find out if a blog has disabled the nofollow tag in its comments by visiting “dofollow” directories such as DoFollow List.  (NOTE:  This blog DOES follow comments, so feel free to post your comments.  Comments are moderated, so if they are spammy, off-topic or off-color, they will be deleted.)

Another way to get inbound links from blogs that are listed in Technorati is to post articles in blogs that allow you to do so.  You can get some inbound links by signing up at The Blurbosphere, where you can post an unlimited number of “blurbs” that point to your blogs and websites.

And last, but not least, a super-powerful method … Sign up as an article submitter at Article Marketing Automation.  This is a superb service that I reviewed here.  I believe that the reason the NotGuru authority is steadily rising is due to the three articles I have been promoting through AMA.  These articles will continue to publish on hundreds of blogs over time, and as I add more, there will be more inbound linking opportunities.  You can get a discount on your AMA membership by becoming a member of NicheRockets and signing up from their special discount link.  NicheRockets is normally $67 a month, but I have an arrangement where you can sign up for only $10 a month.  To claim your $57/month savings, visit this page.

Very informative post. I thought I was an experienced blogger, but I have actually never heard of the DoFollowList, The Blurbosphere and Article Marketing Automation.

    Thanks a lot.

I am still looking for a way to get a higher ranking (more authority) at Technorati. Mine is way to low, but I guess I haven’t really focused on technorati for a long time.

Do you get a lot of traffic from Technorati? I am getting close to nothing, but I get a lot from Google and StumbleUpon (and from many other sources as well).

    Hi Jens,

Thank you for your nice comment. Your SkyMarketing blog looks very successful!

Technorati, MSN and Google tend to be my highest traffic sources. I usually get nice Stumble traffic on other blogs, but for some reason, not on this one! Not sure why …

    Best wishes,
    Urbain

I have just learned about do follow and don’t know about Blobosphere.
    Good info.
I don’t think Technorati works very well. Most of my traffic is coming from do follow and search engines.

You’re right, Janna. Dofollow is definitely important. On this blog, the “nofollow” comment tags have been disabled.
