Keeping it simple, without the hype. PC tips and Internet advice for mom and pop businesses.
How would you feel about downloading your mind onto the Internet? Or just tapping into the Net or some form of artificial super intelligence with your thoughts?
As futuristic as these ideas might seem, they’re not that outlandish.
Here are some interesting trends:
- Dreams No Longer a Secret. A Japanese computer screen may eventually be used to record dreams and other images that a person experiences. According to an article published this month by PhysOrg, the research team has managed to reproduce only simple images from the brain, but they said the technology could eventually be used to figure out dreams and other secrets inside people’s minds. Have you ever had a spouse or significant other get mad at you because of a dream?
- Thought Helmets Developed by the Military. Time Magazine reported in September 2008 that, “. . . the U.S. Army has just awarded a $4 million contract to begin developing ‘thought helmets’ that would harness silent brain waves for secure communication among troops. Ultimately, the Army hopes the project will ‘lead to direct mental control of military systems by thought alone.’” The Army believes that this is a decade or two into the future, and that the only way the thought helmet would work is with free will. Wouldn’t a better alternative be that we evolved beyond war in the next decade or two?
- Commercial Brainwave Headset Already on the Market. NeuroSky, a leader in “think brain technology,” has created “MindSet,” a commercial brain reading headset that can communicate with game consoles, PC’s and mobile platforms such as cell phones. For more information, see TechOn’s report on the NeuroSky technology that was demonstrated at the CTIA Wireless IT & Entertainment 2008 convention in mid-September 2008. Will government eventually mandate this for people who talk on their cell phones while driving?
- Search the Internet With Your Mind. According to an October 2008 article at UltraFuture World, “The world’s first ever Cyborg, Professor Kevin Warwick, is just six to eight years away from another implant, this time a brain implant.” The implant will allow him to link his nervous system with the Internet. He and his wife, who also had electrodes in her nervous system, were able to communicate via the Internet in what is the first electronic brain to brain communication in history. Will your mind get filled with spam messages?
- Transhumanists Will Transcend Biological Limitations. Biotechnology, artificial intelligence and other scientific research may ultimately result in “. . . a new form of ‘posthuman’ life with beings that possess qualities and skills so exceedingly advanced they no longer can be classified simply as humans,” reports CNN about a first-ever Global Catastrophic Risk Conference held earlier this year. With nanotechnological developments, scientists envision a time — perhaps in the not-too-distant future — when humans are able to merge with non-biological systems in order to transcend their biological limitations to participate in a “superintelligence” that can solve the world’s problems.
Share Your Thoughts!
From accessing the Internet with your mind to transcending your biological limitations, how willing are you to embrace emerging technology?
All right – you don’t have to share your thoughts via a neurological transmitter, but you can share them by taking our poll about how willing you are to “plug in” and commenting below. This is a “dofollow” comment blog, so you’ll get link juice for your thoughts. (To answer the poll, just click on the link that you agree with.)
Poll: Would You Be Willing to Plug In?
- For medical reasons only.
- No. What about privacy & free will?
- No. Computing is hard enough as is.
- No. This is the mark of the beast!
- No. This failed in Atlantis.
- Maybe, if it is proven to be safe.
- Yes, this is part of our evolution.
- Other (I am commenting below).

That’s some creepy stuff. Reminds me of an old movie where you could go into peoples dreams can’t remember the name (not the J.Lo. one). It’s exciting to see these breakthroughs and scary at the same time.
Yes, Dr. K – I think there was one called Dreamscape where the president was being attacked through his dreams. The last one, where we would be “transhuman” and able to tap into a super-consciousness is intriguing to me, but the problem is that we need to get beyond the egotistical and controlling political and religious types who would like to see all of humanity conform to their way of thinking. I think the transhuman state can be achieved with focused meditation and isn’t really dependent on technology.
good one………that’s perfect………
It smacks of big brotherism. It’s one step closer to government control of your mind and thoughts, and not just our government. What about possible enemy use? The whole idea is nothing but frightening. If we accept these concepts, we give up all right to individual thought and freedom, and mind control is only a mouse click away.
Deco Diva,
Your statement, “mind control is only a click away,” is brilliant.
There were reports about the Soviets sending thoughts our way during the cold war as part of a big mind control experiment. Sometimes I think there is more going on than actually reported!
Brilliant observation – thanks for your comments.
