Keeping it simple, without the hype. PC tips and Internet advice for mom and pop businesses.
If you are like me, you raced around yesterday, packing up gifts and getting them to UPS or the Postal Service so that they’ll arrive by the 24th. I keep vowing to get packages out the first part of December, and I keep missing the deadline.
No Spirits for the Holidays.
Most of yesterday morning was spent wrapping individual bottles of “extraterrestrial beer” from Roswell with bubble wrap so they wouldn’t break. These are very cool and definitely a unique gift for my beer drinking brothers. The labels are colorfully done, replete with caricatures of Roswell’s infamous aliens. (The beer is quite good, too!)
Once wrapped, I put them in a metal holiday canister for good measure so they would survive the 1400 mile trip.
To make a long story short, I boxed up the canister and about a dozen other gifts in a great big huge box and used up a roll of duct tape to keep it from falling apart.
After all this and patiently standing in line at the local shipping center, I was told at the checkout counter that it was illegal to ship spirits — i.e., wine, beer or other booze — out of Arizona. The box had to be entirely redone (cutting through all that duct tape was not fun), and some didn’t get gifts this holiday season because of it.
The moral of the story – check first before sending a “gift of spirits” this holiday season. Your state may outlaw spreading this type of cheer for the holidays, too.
