Affomatic makes it very easy to include current auctions into your Wordpress posts … and the Wordpress plugin is free.
One of our newbie sites that we’re developing is for a friend of mine who is very knowledgeable about antiques. Elaine’s been writing fantastic, keyword-focused articles. Although the site has not yet been promoted, Elaine is starting to get some nice search engine placements for some of her keywords in Google. For instance, as of today (February 27, 2009), her site is #5 in Google’s search results for the term, deco diva.

For the term diva wrapping paper, she is ranking #9 in Google’s search results.

For these terms, Google has 805,000 results for deco diva and 55,800 results for diva wrapping paper. Granted, these are not millions and millions of results, but Elaine’s placement so high within them is very good for a beginner. Her site is not quite two months old. We’ve been using Jeff Johnson’s free SEO blog software, which I think is what is creating decent results despite the fact that there is no promotion at this stage. I also think that these results are because Elaine is using good keywords and writing consistently. Her blog posts are top notch and definitely deliver value to the reader because she knows what she’s writing about.
The Problem and a Solution.
Elaine’s site, Antiquing with Deco Diva, is starting to see some traffic but the problem is that it has not been monetized other than Adsense. Adsense is great — don’t get me wrong, I use it — but there is no way that an antiquing site will make very much money if it is strictly monetized with Adsense.
So we found a super easy solution that requires no research and very little work other than pasting a line in a blog post and adding a keyword. The solution is Affomatic’s eBay plugin for Wordpress, which is free.
How to Install the Plugin.
Visit Affomatic and enter your email. A download page will be sent to you. Download as you would usually do.

Unzip your downloaded file. You will see that the plugin is simple and straightforward — it’s just one php file.

Using your favorite FTP program, upload the php file into your plugins directory.

Log into the dashboard of your Wordpress blog and activate the plugin.

This entire process should take about five minutes, depending on the speed that you receive your download page by email.
Setting Up Your Affomatic Plugin.
Affomatic makes inserting eBay auctions into your blog super easy. In the administrative dashboard, you will see a link under settings called “AffomaticEbay,” as shown in the screen shot below.

When you click the settings tab, you will see a page that looks like the screen shot below. The affiliate ID is the default ID that comes with the program.

Although the Affomatic eBay settings are straight forward, the eBay affiliate number might be a bit of a challenge. It should be a 10-digit code. To find it quickly, go to your eBay affiliate page and generate an ad creative from your tools. It doesn’t matter what kind of creative you are generating … What you need is the code.

In the screen shot below, I have copied the advertisement code for Elaine’s eBay account into notepad. As you can see in the screen shot, the code contains a “campid=” code. You want the 10-digit number that follows “campid=”.

I copied and then pasted Elaine’s campid into the Affomatic setup screen, and then changed some of the other options. For instance, her plugin will display four current auction items, based on the “antiques” category in eBay.
Inserting the Code Into Your Posts.
Once you have configured your Affomatic eBay plugin with your eBay ID and other information, the plugin will NOT generate ads on the fly in each post, like your Adsense code does. You need to insert a simple code in each post that you want auctions to appear. When doing so, make sure that you select the HTML option, as shown in the screen shot.

Simply add the line supplied by Affomatic in the spot that you want your ads to show. Be sure to leave the brackets in and be sure to enter the appropriate keywords that you want. In this example, Elaine’s article is about Bimini art glass, so I used a relevant keyword — glass art — in the Affomatic code.
This is very easy to do and should not take much effort on your part. You can find the code easily by clicking the settings tab discussed above. For people less comfortable with navigating Wordpress, I recommend that you store the basic line of code,
[AffomaticEbay]Keyword[/AffomaticEbay]
as a document where you can find it quickly. Whenever you want to insert eBay auction items into a blog post, you can quickly find the code, copy and paste it into your blog post, change the keyword and you’re done.

The code generates beautiful, topic-specific results that fit well into the blog post. Here’s the output of what we just added to Elaine’s blog.

You can see the complete blog post about Bimini art glass here. I added a few more of these auctions into her blog. While I still think that specific products need to be reviewed, with affiliate links, the eBay plugin will definitely help to create an additional source of potential income. Because the auction items are so relevant to the topic, Elaine should see some results.
