How Do They Do That … And Why?

Posted on March 22nd, 2009 by Urbain

Every day on this blog, there are at least 50 comments that Akismet has caught and placed in the spam section.  Sometimes the comments are good ones but for the most part, Akismet does a great job in identifying what’s junk and what is not.

A common spam content looks like this (the screen shot only captures a piece of it … the whole thing fills up about one and a half screens):

spamcomments

Obviously, these types of comments are computer generated, but I don’t know what program the spammers are using.  Presumably, they’ve paid good money for the software … but why?

Unless a blog is not maintained and does not use Akismet or some other filtering plugin, I can’t imagine that these types of comments are making it through.  I’d give them a 0.005% chance of being published.

It seems to me that the folks who are generating this type of spam would get more results if they spent the time to write legitimate comments.  What do you think?

When it comes to creating and promoting sites, spending the time to write good articles, comments and web content is what creates lasting value … not purchasing software that automatically spews out spam and scraper material.

well sincerely this is simply a waste of money if they really pay to buy a software for that. At my blog I am ok with people getting a link to there blog. But obviously why would I published such stupid stuff :S. I think there target is to spam those blogs who don’t moderate comments manually.

I agree with you, Argos. I’m all for giving links, but not nonsense links.

I am also agree with you Urbain. We all need some kind of SEO for our sites. But getting links in fair way is always good. Those spam softwares are waste of time.

I have a general site with inquiry form without spam control. Generally I receive 2, 3 spam inquires through inquiry form. But I cant understand why these stupid bots are coming to my site.

Whether it is forum posting or blog commenting I think we should contribute something to get something back. Otherwise it is not fair.

I only have just started a blog and I already get these. I suppose they are auto comments and sent in the millions so even if 0.1% make it that is still a lot.

This kind of work is indeed a waste of money, waste of time and definitely lowers your sites credibility. I totally agree with you, instead of spending time and money on this kind of crap why not create a good connection to other website or blog by giving legitimate comments or if you have the money you can hire someone who can do this for you.

I removed Akismet on my blog but I installed math spam comment plugin to block those spam comments.

How does the math spam plugin work compared with Akismet? Is it better?

I agree with you, Argos. I’m all for giving links, but not nonsense links.

I forgot the name of this plugin in but i saw it on a university website. They ask you something which is related to their university if you cannot give the answer for 3 times. You will be banned.
