Do you want to be able to unzip your downloads without having to pay for software that can unzip it?
I know a few people whose free trial has run out and they are unable to pay for the full version of WinZip, so I’ve been looking around for an alternative solution for them and finally found it: 7-Zip.
7-Zip is totally free and open source. It is as robust — if not more so — than WinZip. Here’s a partial list of what it can handle:
- Supported formats:
- Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR.
- Unpacking only: ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, DEB, DMG, HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MSI, NSIS, RAR, RPM, UDF, WIM, XAR and Z.
- For ZIP and GZIP formats, 7-Zip provides a compression ratio that is 2-10 % better than the ratio provided by PKZip and WinZip.
When you download software and ebooks, it is essential that you have an unzip utility since most of it will come in a compressed format. 7-Zip is the free solution you’ve been looking for.
The program works with Windows operating systems, including Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP and Vista.

In our routine work many times we need to unzip many things, and always there is confusion how to do? but Urbain you have solved the problem, it is really a nice site, thanks for sharing.
Yeah , 7zip is the best freeware to open compressed files ,but if you have some money , PowerArchiver will do better than 7zip .
Power Archiver is fantastic … probably my favorite. The older, free version is available at the Older Versions software site I wrote about a couple weeks ago.
I don’t even know if there’s a free version of Power Archiver available LOL , which version is it ?
