Getting Traffic from CNN

Posted on April 6th, 2009 by Urbain

This is one of those “I discovered it by accident” things that might benefit you.

A few days ago, I noticed that a lot of traffic was coming in from CNN.  It was coming in quickly.  Here’s a look at what was going on, as reported by the Feedjit widget on April 2.

I had no idea why this site was getting traffic from CNN until I took a look at my control panel.  On April 1, I posted a brief article about the April Fool’s Day virus and referenced CNN’s tech article.  CNN’s website gives pingbacks to blogs linking to the stories, and that’s where the clicks were coming from.

Here’s the traffic that has come in as of Sunday night, 9:00 Arizona time, just from that one page in CNN:

By accident, what I had done was tap into a “hot trend,” referenced a CNN news story, and tapped into traffic.  What was weird about this was I was rushing for a meeting that morning and cranked the article out without too much thought, screen shots or preparation.

For those of you who are familiar with the hot trend marketing, I think linking to big news blogs might be a strategy to employ.  Almost 200 visitors from just one short article is not bad!

After looking at some other stats on other websites, I think it is well worth looking at popular online news outlets to see if they have track backs … and then citing them in your blogs featuring hot trends.

This is a really novel approach and definitely warrants some investigation.

I’m going to keep playing with it and create a list of all of the major media that gives trackbacks. This could be a wonderful source of traffic that I’ll share here.
