For “run of the mill” kinds of blogs, there are a lot of quality free themes out there that look pretty good and will do the trick. Frankly, this blog has a free Wordpress theme — although I did send the developer some money as a way of saying thanks, so I guess technically, it is not free.
For professional, magazine style blogs, however, I prefer to use paid themes because they are kept up to date with Wordpress’ updates and have a support department, if you need technical help.
Elegant Themes is probably one of the most affordable premium theme sites, at just $19.95 a year.
Most of the Elegant Themes have simple editing options, where you can easily switch the colors and whether or not you want “featured” articles. They incorporate the TimThumb plugin that generates thumbnails on the fly. The thumbnails show up in the descriptions of your blog posts, and the larger image shows up in the post iteself. The $19.95 a year lets you download all or some of the themes, and gives you access to the new themes that are released. A new theme that’s about to come out works with Wordpress’ pages, and in particular, the front page, so that you can have a nice business site that includes a professional page layout with your blog.
A new one that came out from Smashing Magazine — that’s free — is called the Magazeen theme. This is a professional looking magazine theme that will transform your blog into a stunning presentation. This is one of the most impressive free themes I’ve seen in awhile.

Ananda, beauty is in the eye of the beholder! You should find a theme that is compatible with the latest version of Wordpress, however. If they are not compatible, there can be some frustrating problems.
