If you’ve logged into your WordPress administration panel yesterday or this morning, you’ve probably seen a notice that it’s time to update to WordPress 2.8. Do it — don’t put it off. It takes just a minute or two to update and you’re going to love it.
What’s New.
In 2.7, you could install plugins directly from your dashboard. This feature has been enhanced to include themes. With this upgrade, you look at different themes and install them directly from your dashboard. This rocks — saving a lot of time in downloading, unzipping, FTP’ing and so on.
Not only did they add the awesome theme feature, but the widget capabilities have been expanded greatly. You can now edit your code so much easier because it has the typical colors you would find in an HTML editor.
This free program is absolutely incredible.
How to Install Your Update.
As you may have noticed in the last WordPress update, you can update your WordPress software on the fly. I used to use the “automatic upgrade” plugin, but it’s not necessary anymore because of WordPress’ improved interface. At the top of your screen, you should see the “WordPress 2.8 is available. Please update now” notice. The line on the top of my screen shot shows my automatic upgrade plugin, which could also be used. The WordPress version on the 2nd line is much easier, however, and takes about a minute to do.
After clicking the “Please update now” link, you will be taken to a page on your dashboard that looks like the picture below. Simply click “Upgrade Automatically” and you will be set to go! Because everyone is updating right now, you might need to click it a few times before the connection to the download server is made.
Once you’ve been able to connect through the Upgrade Automatically feature, WordPress will show you what it is doing.
Once the upgrade has been installed, you will be redirected to your log in page and you will need to log back in. This is because the dashboard has changed and the version that you were using will no longer be available.
