In response to Google’s free online office applications, Microsoft will implement a “cloud” technology that will provide free core elements of its Office Suite online.
According to the Financial Times, Google only has “a few hundred thousand” paid subscribers to its online office suite, but has 15 million subscribers to its free version. In a competitive move, Microsoft will have scaled down versions of its Office suite (such as Word, PowerPoint, etc.) available for online use at no charge. The free Office suite is expected to launch in early 2010.
The Financial Times opines that, “Most analysts believe a free, stripped-down version of Office online to rival the free Google Apps service would do little to hurt Microsoft’s revenues, since it would only appeal to relatively small numbers.”
