Microsoft will appeal a ruling by a Texas District Court judge — but for now, it’s mind blowing.
According to US Today, a small, Toronto-based software company named i4i sued Microsoft over a patent related to XML (Extensible Markup Language). XML is key to many software programs and websites, including Word.
Not only did the court order Microsoft to stop selling Word until the patent dispute is resolved, but it was ordered to pay $240 million in damages to i4i.

I saw this last week on the BBC website.
I could not believe it….
I guess Microsoft could just disable the features that use XML, it is my understanding that it is mainly the ability to save in XML type formats that is the main issue.
If this isn’t too heavily integrated into the coding they can probably work around.
However I’m sure they’ll fight this instead….
This is astonishing.
