Keeping it simple, without the hype. PC tips and Internet advice for mom and pop businesses.
In today’s economic climate, retailers are reporting that netbooks are becoming quite popular because they are considerably less expensive than notebooks or laptops. You can find netbooks for less than $300. Some are slightly more expensive.
Netbooks are quite small, with a screen size of around 10 inches. They usually weigh less than 3 pounds and are designed for Internet access.
From what I have looked at, netbooks generally have a strong processing speed, with the latest versions having around 1.66GHz. You’ll find ample hard drive storage of around 160 GB and USB ports, microphone and headphone jacks, and in some cases, internal webcams. Some come with Smart Card readers.
What you won’t find on a netbook is a RW/CD or DVD player. While the systems can handle your word processing needs or PowerPoint presentations, you will not be able to install the software with a CD. To work around this, you can get accessories such as a DVD±RW optical drive that’s basically a plug and play device that supports reading and writing of CDs and DVDs.
For the budget conscious person, a netbook might provide the portability you’re looking for at a fraction of the price. For heavy graphics, PDF and other developers and designers, you are probably better off getting a laptop or notebook for your mobile computing. You also need to keep in mind that netbooks are quite small, so if you are used to a desktop or a large screen laptop, you might be in for a surprise.
